Six months with Claude Code: what I actually learned
When I first started using Claude Code six months ago, I expected it to be a fancy autocomplete. I was wrong — but not in the way you might think.
The real shift wasn't about writing code faster. It was about changing how I think about problems. Here's what actually stuck after the honeymoon phase wore off.
The patterns that worked
Start with the test, not the implementation. I found that describing what I wanted to test — the behaviour, the edge cases, the expected outputs — gave Claude Code far better context than describing the implementation directly. The tests became a shared specification language.
Small, focused prompts beat epic ones. My best results came from breaking work into small, well-scoped tasks. "Add validation to the email field in the contact form" beats "build me a contact form with validation and error handling and success states."
Read the code it writes. This sounds obvious but it's easy to fall into the trap of accepting suggestions without understanding them. The moment I stopped reading was the moment bugs started creeping in.
The pitfalls I hit
Over-relying on it for architecture decisions. Claude Code is excellent at implementing patterns but it doesn't know your business context. I learned to make architectural decisions myself and use Claude Code for execution.
Not providing enough context. Early on, I'd ask for changes without explaining the broader system. The code would be technically correct but miss important constraints that only I knew about.
What actually changed
My workflow now looks fundamentally different. I spend more time thinking and less time typing. I spend more time reviewing and less time debugging. And I ship features that used to take days in hours.
The tool didn't replace my judgment — it amplified it. And that distinction matters more than any benchmark.
